Lanzarote – The Ideal Choice For Relocation Abroad

Why is Lanzarote such a popular choice as a destination for those seeking a new life abroad?  This small island in the Atlantic already boasts a very cosmopolitan population with around 30% of the 150,000 residents hailing from a country other than Spain.  And more émigrés from the colder countries of Northern Europe continue to arrive.

One of the key factors is of course climate.  The Canary Islands offer sunshine all year round and Lanzarote boasts a very low level of rainfall to boot, making it possible for people to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle all year round.  Contrast this with say the UK, where residents are stuck indoors for 6 months of the year and you quickly realize it’s no contest.

This wonderful weather not only enables people to enjoy a better quality of life but also helps to keep the cost of living down too.  As heating bills are largely non-existent, whilst the cost of other utilities are much cheaper than in the UK.  Other essentials such as petrol and food are also around 30% less expensive whilst eating out is also very affordable.

Less tangible is the impact on mood and outlook of living in the sun.  But there can be little doubt that it is much easier to assume a positive outlook on life when the sky is blue and the sun is shining – and this in turn produces many health benefits too.

So where are the best spots on the island for those thinking about planning a new life on Lanzarote?  The three main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise tend to attract the highest level of new arrivals, as here they can find a greater concentration of thei4r fellow expatriates and are able to get away with more limited language skills.  However, there are plenty of more intrepid types who immerse themselves in the full experience, choosing to go native in one of the many delightful rural villages located around the island, such as Haria, Yaiza or Arrieta.

Cosmopolitan types may also like to consider starting a new life abroad in Arrecife, as the island capital has many of the comforts of home such as shops and supermarkets as well as boasting some great unique features such as a city centre beach.  The El Charco area is also very attractive, providing a great environment for strolling, people watching and enjoying a drink or a bit to eat.
